Beaches

Follow the coast road north through Kinlochbervie and enter a crofting landscape dotted with stunning beaches.  Sandwood Bay is reached via a 4-mile walk from the hamlet of while Oldshoremore, Polin and Sheigra are easily accessible from the road. Relax on the golden sands of Oldshoremore, Polin, Sheigra and Sandwood; swim or dive in the clear aqua water or surf the waves.

On Sandwood, be awed by ‘Am Buachaille’ – in English translation this means ‘The Shepherd’ – an impressive sea stack, standing strong against a backdrop of deep blue.

Between the beaches of Oldshoremore and Polin, there is rough pasture where there lies an unmarked burial plot believed to be the crew and passengers of a ship wrecked on ‘Eilean na h-Aiteig ’.  The wreck lies adjacent to the beach and although no precise date is attached to this maritime disaster, it is thought to have occurred in the 19th century.

During World War 2, there were two instances of Spitfires landing on the beach at Sandwood Bay after suffering engine problems.

There are car parks at Polin,  Oldshoremore , Blairmore and Sheigra as well as public toilets at Oldshoremore and Blairmore.

Sheigra to Oldshoremore

Site of Special Scientific Interest

The 9-mile stretch of coast between Sheigra and Oldshoremore is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.  Covering an area of 620 acres, it is one of the best examples in Britain of a dune and machair habitat.  Machair is the coastal grassland (characterised by shifting sand dunes with marram grass).  The machair has over 220 species of flowering plants including several different types of orchid.

Sandwood Bay

The beach at Sandwood Bay is reached via a 4-mile long walking path.  The majority of the walk is through an area grazed by sheep and sometimes cows.  Towards the beach, the terrain becomes dominated by sand dunes and machair.

The path starts at Blairmore where a car park and public toilets are available.  No vehicles are allowed on the path although bicycles are permitted approximately half-way (bike rack available).
