|Celebrity cook and broadcaster Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall has launched a campaign to fight the discarding of huge numbers of dead fish because they exceed European Union quotas.|
Some estimates suggest that as many as half the fish caught in the North Sea are thrown back dead because to land them would be illegal under the Common Fisheries Policy.
No-one likes to see perfectly good fish wasted and the Scottish fishing fleet have been at the forefront in developing new technologies to reduce the number of fish caught that have to be discarded such as selective nets and CCTV to monitor the fish entering the mouth of the net.
Hugh is campaigning for a review of the CFP that will allow fishermen to land excess fish instead of forcing them to discard them.
